The Peking to Paris Motor Challenge 1997
September 6 - October 18, 1997
Bulletin 29 (Day 43) - End of the Adventure
Saturday 18 October Reims to Paris 175 kms
A straight road and a short distance for a relaxing and a happy final day's run into Paris with the Final Control point in the Place de la Concorde.
Although written confirmation is yet to arrive from Paris, now it is really all over! Almost 24 hours after the finish, it must be assumed that everyone is still celebrating hard - which means that yesterday morning's run into Paris, via the 'Holding Control' at La Villette, close to the Boulevard Peripherique in the French capital, was quite uneventful.
Assuming there were no changes to the Classifications since Friday night, this means that Phil Surtees' Willys Jeep has won the 90th Anniversary event, beating Ted Thomas' Ford-USA Club Coupe by four minutes, with John Catt's Ford Cortina in third place.
Jonathan Lux (Rover P5B), who had to drop out of the main Challenge when he had to change his crew - his co-driver became ill and had to leave the car in the middle of the event - has won the Touring Category.
The fact is, though, that everyone is a winner in this magnificent event. To drive classic cars half-way round the world, against the clock, against the elements, and against the geography, has been a magnificent achievement for all 82 cars and crews which arrived in Paris!
