Sunday, 10:00 - Brough - Castle Hotel
This is the final run back to the Harrogate finish of the 2008 Lombard Rally. There are two selectifs, Greystoke and Warcop, before the cars reach the morning coffee halt here at Brough. The historic category Avenger Tiger of Kevin Clark and Tom Leeming is back on all four wheels the crew having repaired its broken stub axle and exhaust overnight. Stuart and Linda Cariss also had a busy time yesterday travelling from Glasgow to York to make exhaust and gearbox repairs to their Escort before returning to rejoin the rally at Moffat. They are happy to back in the running albeit in last place at the Carlisle restart.

Saturday, 23:50 - Carlisle
Crews are arriving in Carlisle at the end of Leg 3 having completed the final two selectifs of the day since the Moffat supper halt. There is a good buzz from the bar as crews sense that Harrogate is almost within reach and knowing that they have a luxuriously late 8am start tomorrow. The news is that Karl O'Donoghue and Alan Dorman were off in Ae 4 until the MG ZR of Tom O'Connor and Vincent Fagan pulled them back on. Dave Wright did get the diesel engined VW Golf running again at Castle Douglas. It sounded ok but unfortunately only made 400 yards up the road before the engine totally self-destructed.

Saturday, 20:00 - Carlisle
At Castle Douglas there were 32 crews still running in the Endurance category and nine Historics. Arriving at Carlisle the results team found two more retirements… Andy Actman and Catriona Rings have a broken strut on their AX GT and Richard and Jon Sandilands have retired the Micra with a broken drive shaft. They found a replacement but it turned out to have the wrong splines so they have called it a day. We have just heard that the Avenger Tiger has a snapped front stub axle at the end of Ae4. Kevin and Tom are determined to get the car fixed so they can restart for the final Leg tomorrow.

Saturday, 14:50 - Castle Douglas - Lunch Halt
Ben Dawson thinks he might have blown his chances after taking an extra long way round Greskine this morning dropping him further behind the leading pair. At the Castle Douglas lunch time service parc Ray Johnson-Wood was seen nervously looking at the near-side front strut top that is trying to punch a hole through the bonnet. Ian and Lesley Patterson have retired their Rover Metro with underside, mechanical and electrical damage.
The tyres are brilliant… really good.
Karl O'Donoghue - Rover 200
Tyre wear and performance is generally considered excellent with no punctures being reported.... the only car seen with severe tyre wear to date is the Whitaker Ford Cortina.... the car also has clearly visible toe-out that could be measured in inches. They cut the McRae Selectif to make time for tracking repairs here in Castle Douglas. The leading historic Escort of Butterworth and Proctor has exhaust problems that might be difficult to repair. The Skoda Felica of Paul Train and John Milner is limping with a broken cross member and hoping to find a welding shop to make repairs. Dave Wright says the VW Golf engine has seized... Lindsey Annison is quoted as telling Dave "You can fix it...", Dave is not so sure. Traffic delays on the way to Castle Douglas have required that times for the afternoon Leg have been set back 30 minutes.

The chicanes are tight… "If your mirrors are intact you're not trying on this rally"
Saturday, 10:00 - Thornhill
First test of the day was getting out of the Glasgow Airport parc ferme car park after the barriers developed a mind of their own. Perhaps they were reacting to so many season ticket holders… (tickets generously donated by NCP Car Parks) ….leaving at such an early hour on a Saturday morning. Before arriving here at Thornhill for a welcome coffee break the crews have already tackled 22 miles of selectifs today through, Greskine, Ae1 and Ae2. Next up is the longest test on the event, the 16.5 mile Colin McRae Selectif. Another retirement notified overnight is the Mike and Alex Thornton Polo with a broken drive shaft and subframe breakage.

Saturday, 01:40 - Glasgow - End of Leg Two
The results shown below show that Karl O'Donoghue has snatched the lead back from Ben Dawson who drops to third at the end of Leg 2.
The comment 'Morale among crews is really high' from Lindsey Annison is typical from crews who survived one of the toughest days rallying they have probably ever enjoyed. Marshals report the tired drivers and navigators grinning from ear to ear as they returned to Glasgow and disappeared to bed for a few hours sleep before tomorrow's early start on Leg 3.
Some were not so lucky... cars known to have retired are Doug Brown/Graham Raeburn (Vauxhall Nova); Frank Fennell/John Morgan (Rover 214); Martin Kernahan/Simon Lassam (MG ZR); Keith Butler/Kenny Matier (MG ZR); Declan Waters/Peter Murphy (Citroen AX); Claire Donovan/ Rhidian Jones (Nissan Micra); Paul Flinders / Debs Flinders (Suzuki Swift GTi); Philip Swain/Oliver Swain (Suzuki Swift Gti); Martin Holdsworth/Peter Turner (Peugeot 205); Mark Wilson/Andrew Harper (Suzuki Swift); Giles Smith/Richard Wallis (Peugeot 106 Rallye); Chris Parkes/John Taylor (Saab 850 Sport)

Friday, 20:05 - Inveraray - TC6.2
It does not get much closer than this. At Inveraray the Rover 214 of Ben and Mike Dawson has taken the lead by one second from Karl O'Donoghue and Alan Dorman. The rain has started again... it will be well past midnight before the weary crews reach Glasgow at the end of Leg 2 of the 2008 Lombard Rally.

Friday, 19:10 - Inveraray - TC6.2
The leading Endurance category cars have now passed through TC6.2 without repoting any major incidents. Paul Heal took a few minutes while it's not raining to fit a pair of fresh tyres on the front of his MG ZR. The ones he took off were only showing light wear but with a long way still to go Paul reckoned it was a good time to make the change.

Friday, 18:35 - Inveraray - TC6.2
Peter Baker and Willy Cave in the Mini are the first car to arrive on rally route at TC6.2. After booking in they are taking a few minutes for the RAC breakdown crews to work on the exhaust. The Lancia Coupe Rallye of Jack Curan and David Bardwell has just checked through TC6.2 and continued without any apparent problem. The Butterworth / Proctor Escort is also here with the RAC boys checking it over although it certainly sounded healthy enough when it arrived. The Cariss Escort and the Whitaker Cortina have also both arrived. And mercifully the rain has stopped for a while.

After being stuck off the road for some time Rob and Graham Dance are waiting here at Inveraray to rejoin the event when it comes through. Their car was undamged but they lost a lot of time before being towed out. Martin Kernahan has phoned to confirm that he on the way home. Driving one of the tighter chicanes he took to the verge and hit a hidden rock ‘the size of a football’…. this broke the TCA; the car lurched across the track into the opposite ditch… with no spares available it was game over.

The Rover 200 of Karl O'Donoghue and Alan Dorman at the Loch Fyne lunch halt.
Friday, 14:10 - Loch Fyne Oyster Bar - Lunch Halt
The cars are arriving late at the Loch Fyne lunch halt in pouring rain under grey skies. It's too early to accurately report the current leader board but the O'Donoghue / Dorman Rover is safely here as is the historic category Avenger Tiger of Clark and Leeming although the muddy state of this crews clothing is witness that the Avenger has been off. The RAC service crews are busy assisting several crews who all have a shortened lunch break due to delays this morning. All later controls times today are being put back 30 mins to allow a little opportunity for food and rest.

Friday, 09:50 - Loch Fyne Oyster Bar
After a 6am start from Glasgow this morning the Lombard Rally route headed north along the banks of Loch Lomond and through two selectifs, Drimsynie and Rest and Be Thankful, before arriving here at the Loch Fyne Oyster bar to where the cars return two further times on today’s 400 mile route. First news of the day is that Doug Brown has not arrived here and is thought to be waiting for a tow after an off on Drimsynie..... and, we have just heard that Martin Kernahan has retired having not reached the end of Drimsynie.

A message from Ross Butterworth and Ali Proctor says “Loving the historics...” . They had a slippy and eventful off in Stang 1 and give thanks to Linda and Stuart Cariss for the tow. In Keilder they bent the steering which stuffed the front tyres but the excellent RAC have fixed that.

Over 12 miles in Keilder has proved a problem for Sawley and Johnson in the MG ZR who took a maximum dropping them well down from their earlier 5th placing. Quickest through Keilder was the Rover 200 of O’Donoghue and Dorman completing the test in 19:57, nine seconds quicker than the Brown/Raeburn Nova.

The crews are beginning to arrive in Glasgow at the end of the first long day of the 2008 Lombard Rally... for some it will be a very short night before the 6am Friday morning restart. Dave Wright and Lindsey Annison are thoroughly enjoying their Lombard…. The steering wheel fell off in Slaley but they still cleaned the selectif but were not so lucky in Keilder where they had to wait for the course closing car to drag the Golf back on its wheels after spending over an hour on its side in a watery ditch. Perhaps the highlight for Lindsey was having Tony Mason sign her book on the start line in Harrogate.

Frank Fennell’s main problem is a damaged radiator. The RAC breakdown crews have located a replacement but it may take some time to arrive. The Goodwin/Hernaman Citroen C2 has a clutch problem that they may not be able to solve. A glance round the car park shows only slight tyre wear after the 12 miles of selectives to Hexam and the general comment on their performance in the wet conditions is very favourable.

The Historic category cars are running to a slower average speed on the Selectifs than the Endurance cars with the results that most of them beat the bogey time on selectif two and early indications are that some of them are cleaning other tests. Willy Cave reports that sitting on a selectif start line he watched while the Cariss Escort, running two cars in front, went off on the first corner to be pulled out by the Parkes/Taylor Saab, running one in front, all this in time for Willy and Peter Barker in their Mini to start on time. Frank Fennell has just arrived on the end of a rope with the front of his Rover somewhat bent. It’s not yet known if he will be continuing.

Early news snippets as cars begin to arrive at Hexham are the Rob Dance had to walk two miles to find a garage after running out of petrol. The Griffiths/Broughall Rover 200 has broken a strut but the crew is hopeful of making repairs and rejoining later. Bankhurst/Marshall have sent a message that they have lost their forest virginity(?) in Boltby. The Team Pudsey MGZR of Ray Johnston-Wood and Zenya Heap are grateful to RAC breakdown crews who fixed their broken trip meter within a couple of minutes. And the Avenger Tiger crew are grateful to the marshals that pushed them back on the road after an off in Stang 2.

12:45 - From A66 Motel
Crews have now gone through the Boltby selectif describing it as slippery but nice and flowing and are arriving at the A66 Motel Time Control with enough time for a quick coffee. Credit goes to Ben and Mike Dawson who did 1:36 on the Yorkshire Events Centre selectif to claim fastest time on that test a little after our previous update was posted.
