  Revival Rally FAQ

Some answers to the questions being asked about the Revival Rally - a different kind of rallying

1) What age does my car have to be?
There are no age limits - it can be any age, it can be as old as you like... or brand new, but must have been a four-seater saloon or hatchback model - not sports cars.

2) What trim can I take out?
Most existing trim must remain in place. The MSA have ruled that rear seat must be fitted. You can take out most of the trim, but must leave in the door-trims, dashboard, and have some sort of roof lining (which does not have to be the original material). You must have carpets in the front footwell, but rear carpets can be removed. You can change the front seats and the steering wheel if you wish...

3) What can I do to the engine?
Nothing. You can not modify it or tune it, or fit additional go-faster parts. Turbocharged models are not permitted. You can alter the electronics, but that is it. You must have the standard manifold to the exhaust, but the exhaust after the exit of the manifold can be totally modified in terms of dimensions, or route, but must keep the catalytic converter. All parts must be identical to a part with the manufacturer's part number for the model entered. Out of production models prior to 1990 may be rebored, up to 60 thou. or machined in accordance with Group Two modifications of the period.
You can not modify the gearbox, transmission, or fit a limited slip differential, and even the brakes must be standard except for a change of pads, fluid, or brake pipe material.

4) Can I uprate the suspension?
Yes, you can fit different springs, change the shockabosorbers, change the bushes (but not metal rose joints), but only the original mounting points must be used.

5) Can I fit different wheels and tyres?
Yes, so long as they fit under the wheel arches of the original car, with no modification to the standard bodywork. Tyres have to be Colway ROAD plus, which is stronger than a standard tyre, with reinforced sidewalls, using modern AVON rubber, a Pirelli pattern, on Michelin casings.... they are about £35 - many rally tyres are three times the price- you carry what you think you need for the whole event. You could do the whole Revival Rally on one set. We mark all your tyres at the start... and check them along the way. Its the same for all, nobody has better tyres than you. And this policy drastically cuts down the costs of competing.

6) Can I modify the bodywork to fit a sumpshield, tank shield, front strut brace, or weld up the areas around the suspension, or move the screen washer bottle, or fit a rollover hoop?
Yes, that all sounds sensible. A village garage could prepare your car in a couple of days.... popular models can have a rollover hoop from Safety Devices for little over £100.... an unusual model that has to have this hand-made, or a full cage will cost more. You choose.

7) Can anyone have a go?
Absolutely! There are no restrictions like having to have past experience, you do NOT need a competition licence.... a number of first-timers are expected, the essential appeal of the new MSA Endurance Rally regulations is easy access. There are shorter rallies to gain experience, like the Lakes and Dales, (weekend of March 21) and the Welsh Enduro, (one full day, July 18), and Alan Smith runs a one-day Sunday training run to help brush up time keeping and navigation - two are planned next year.

8) How tricky is the navigation?
It's not designed to be a headache, but some sort of experience of time-keeping and navigation on the move - Alan Smith's course is a good place to start - will make the challenge more enjoyable.

9) So... what does it cost?
The entry fee is £998, for an up to one-litre car and £1150 for cars over this size.... half the price of some other major events. Hotels are extra, but we aim to provide you with a choice from hotel to B&B, passing on the full discounts for you to obtain when the hotel sees your name on the entry-list. Other cost saving initiatives such as the adoption of Colway tyres will not only save you a packet but promote the level playing field we are looking for. Restrictions on servicing and the provision of our own truly exceptional mobile workshops, available to all competitors, all combine to make the Revival Rally a value-for-money package designed to be highly attractive for clubmen.

10) What about older cars, not quite so standard.... like a works-style Mini Cooper?
Quite. If an older car is rebored using manufacturer's oversize pistons and within the class limits that is fine, you can machine or polish the internals to FIA Group Two, while still retaining standard parts. So if you have a Mini built as a works-replica Group Two car, that is fine by us..... that said, it's not itended to be a rally full of Historics but some variety though will be welcome. Call us for a chat.

11) Where can I meet the Organisers?
You can drop into our office in normal office hours, we are here to help you. You can meet us in March when we are organising a series of Rally Club Nights around the country - details and venues will be posted up on the website.
